Recently we have invented a function that enables reliable auto landing with fixed wing aircraft on runways of any airport worldwide

Runways are not required to have ILS facilities to use autoland.



Method:


Press the "menu" button on the EFIS and select either


  • an airport or
  • a near airport or
  • a near runway 


Then, press the "menu" button on the EFIS again and select either


  • fly touch and go ultrashort or 
  • fly touch and go short or 
  • fly touch and go normal or 
  • fly touch and go straight or 
  • fly touch and go steep 


Result:


If an airport is selected without a runway, FSXPilot will try to evaluate the best runway for landing according to ground wind and select that one. 


Then, the program creates virtual GPS waypoints for landing. the first waypoint is 30 deg off the runway heading (see below)  in order to properly "catch" the aircraft. 

The rest of the waypoints are aligned exactly runway heading and, later, in a rectangle that leads back to waypoint _1. 


Before reaching waypoint _1, FSXPilot will set a useful altitude for the approach and continuously set the sink rate to a value that guarantees that _1 is reached at that altitude. 

When reaching waypoint _1, FSXPilor will switch time acceleration to 1 and set IAS to approach speed + 20. 

The aircraft will turn to waypoint _2. 

When reaching waypoint _2, FSXPilot will set flaps, lower gear (if necessary), set IAS to approach speed and switch landing lights on.

The aircraft will then follow all waypoints until touchdown. 

Shortly before that, FSXPilot will set throttle to zero and flare. Touchdown should be near centerline. 

After touchdown, FSXPilot will wait for 5 seconds and the takeoff again with flaps set to position 1. 

It will retract gear and fly towards the next waypoint at the end of the runway. From here, the aircraft will turn left, left again and fly back to waypoint _1 at waypoint _1 altitude. 


From here, the next touch and go will be automatically flown. 

The program flies the touch and go's forever or until it gets a new HDG or a new NAV target or a new auto landing landing command.   



CAVEAT


This method is intended for the use with fixed wing aircraft only. 

Use the right landing method for your aircraft (big jets -> normal; small jets or single prop -> short; light aircraft -> ultrashort). 

GPS auto landing has NO method to calculate whether the waypoint areas are obstructed or not. 

In areas with high mountains either try to use the "straight" or the "steep" auto landing option. 


GPS auto landing may fail during approaches with strong crosswinds. In that case, please do what every pilot would do worldwide: Fly your touch and go manually.
